Finding true fulfillment in both professional and personal spheres remains elusive for many leaders. Raymond Rodriguez-Torres has discovered the power of aligning these worlds through purpose-driven leadership. Drawing from personal experiences that shaped his perspective, Raymond offers practical wisdom on how purpose can transform organizational culture and individual career satisfaction while creating meaningful impact.
Discovering Purpose Through Loss
“When I found that I am working in something that doesn’t align with my personal mission in life, I am less engaged, less fulfilled, and potentially less successful in it,” Raymond tells me, leaning forward slightly. It’s a lesson he learned the hard way. His journey took a devastating turn when his 4-year-old child was diagnosed with pediatric cancer and later passed away. This tragedy reshaped his entire approach to work and life. Already established in healthcare, Raymond found himself uniquely positioned to tackle pediatric oncology with both professional expertise and deeply personal motivation.
“That fire within me to accomplish a personal mission became possible through the vehicle of my professional work,” he explains. He credits early mentors too – particularly his physician father whose compassionate patient care left a lasting impression. “I saw the passion, compassion, professionalism and dedication that he treated his patients with. As a young boy that example shaped me.”
Finding Meaning Beyond a Paycheck
Raymond brings up something surprisingly simple yet profound: “Most professionals will find that we spend more time at work than we do at home, with our families, with our loved ones.” Given this reality, he emphasizes that work should be purpose-driven and aligned with your personal values. He contrasts two scenarios at weekend gatherings. In one, someone proudly describes how their work impacts communities and creates positive change. In the other, someone flatly states they work nine-to-five somewhere. “That’s a travesty,” Raymond says with genuine concern.
What about all those people stuck in jobs they don’t love? Raymond believes identifying personal passion is crucial but admits it’s “an introspective journey.” He suggests finding mentors who inspire you – not for their wealth, but for their impact. “When someone passes away, the accolades spoken by their beloved family and friends aren’t about how much money they made,” he points out. “It’s about the impact they made on the community and the world.”
Creating Purpose Within Organizations
For company leaders, Raymond offers practical ways to foster purpose. “Have a good pulse of the organization. What are people passionate about? What’s happening in the community?” he suggests. Sometimes it’s supporting team members facing health challenges or rallying around disaster relief efforts. He shares a story that perfectly illustrates his approach. While lecturing for Roche in Peru during an important national soccer match, he noticed employees were physically present but mentally elsewhere. After introducing himself formally, he declared, “I personally feel more Peruvian than ceviche!” then opened his suit shirt to reveal Peru’s national team jersey underneath. “They went wild,” Raymond recalls with a smile. “That moment was far more important than anything I said about the business, but it inspired people to be engaged.”
As artificial intelligence transforms workplaces, Raymond believes purpose matters more than ever. “Purpose is the great X factor throughout human history, but even more so now with the inflection point we have in society because of AI.” While acknowledging AI’s computational power, Raymond insists it can’t replace our need for emotional connection and meaning. “No one will go to a weekend cookout with friends and family and when they ask ‘What do you do?’ say ‘AI tells me what to do.'”
What people really want to know, he explains, is: “What contribution to the world do you make? What are you passionate about? What drives you?” These questions speak to purpose – something Raymond believes will remain uniquely human even as technology advances.
