Chris Mashburn: Integrating AI to Enhance Organizational Processes and Decision-Making In Healthcare

Chris Mashburn

Today’s healthcare industry faces mounting pressures, from rising costs, complex coding changes, and increased demand for patient-centered care. Thankfully visionary leaders like Chris Mashburn are lighting the path forward. With a rich career spanning healthcare, biotech, and law enforcement, Mashburn is a passionate advocate for using artificial intelligence to revolutionize healthcare operations.

As Chief Operation Officer at Jorie Healthcare, he’s leading the charge in how AI can be used to improve organizational efficiency and patient outcomes. “AI can be a fundamental component of helping an organization be more structured, and also be more expedient in its process,” says Mashburn. His mission is to use automation and AI to shift the healthcare industry from archaic manual systems to streamlined, intelligent workflows. He recently shared his vision for how this can be done.

From Manual Mayhem to AI-Driven Efficiency

One of the most pressing challenges in healthcare is its long-standing dependence on manual processes. “Healthcare is very manual. Every step, from scheduling to claims management, has traditionally relied on human effort, resulting in inefficiencies and bottlenecks.

Mashburn’s approach at Jorie Healthcare brings back-office and clinical support operations into sharp focus. “Our focus has been on taking that entirely manual process and making it entirely automated with the help of AI,” he explained. Before AI, it was not a possible feat to achieve.” This artificial intelligence transformation not only boosts efficiency but also reduces the administrative burden on healthcare workers, who often face burnout from the increasing complexity in coding clinical procedures.

Drawing A Parallel with Law Enforcement

Mashburn sees compelling parallels between his past experience in law enforcement and his current work in healthcare. “I do liken a law enforcement officer approaching a situation much like a physician,” he says. To that point, Mashburn recognizes that in both fields, professionals are often bogged down by the need to document and process information manually, which detracts from their ability to focus on human interaction at the heart of their work.

“For a physician, it’s taking their focus off the task at hand, and really looking eye to eye with the patient, hearing the patient,” Mashburn notes. Similarly, in law enforcement, too much focus on manual paperwork at times, can be an in-the-moment safety issue. This insight has shaped Mashburn’s passion for implementing AI systems that allow professionals to engage fully in their core responsibilities.

AI That Serves Without Replacing

Despite public concern about AI displacing human jobs or becoming intrusive, Mashburn believes it’s all about how AI is implemented. “What some may think as scary, like a robot taking your information and doing whatever with it, is much different than reality,” he says. Instead, AI in healthcare can be very rule-driven. “It does exactly what you’ve told it to do, and it understands the process just like you’ve programmed it to.”

He’s also quick to address concerns around data privacy. “Our data today in healthcare is much more secure with automation than it is with the manual process,” Mashburn explains. “An AI automation agent will not vary from what you’ve instructed it and developed it to do.”

Predictive Intelligence in Patient Care

While much of Jorie Healthcare’s current work is focused on operational efficiency, Mashburn also notes that they’re investing in predictive analytics. “Jorie is actually doing some predictive analytics on outcomes of a person going to the physician.” AI can analyze a patient’s history and prompt a physician to address potential concerns that may not be immediately evident. “This patient may be coming to you because they have a runny nose today, but we’ve looked back at their history and there’s a very good likelihood that you should discuss the possibility of diabetes.”

Mashburn is realistic yet optimistic about the future challenges of integrating AI in the healthcare industry. “The biggest opportunity for AI is taking the burnout of the staff, and making their productivity 100 times more,” he says. However, transitioning from legacy systems isn’t easy. Leadership in this space requires clear communication and a patient-first mindset. Mashburn believes success lies in making AI an extension of human care rather than a replacement for it. “If automation is being used in a healthcare setting versus not. It serves our best interest,” he affirmed.
